PETRA KVITOVA NOMINATED FOR LAUREUS WORLD SPORTS AWARDS
[LONDON] - 2011 Wimbledon Ladies Champion and Wilson ambassador Petra Kvitova has been nominated in two prestigious categories at the 2012 Laureus World Sports Awards. The Czech star features in both the World Sportswoman of the Year and World Breakthrough of the Year categories.
2011 was an impressive year for Petra, winning 7 titles on Tour. At just 21, she swung her Wilson Tour BLX to win her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. In October of the same year she beat the World's best to win the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul becoming only the third player in history to win the event at her first attempt (following Serena Williams in 2001 and Maria Sharapova in 2004).
Petra began 2011 outside the top 30, but finished the year just one spot away from the top of the rankings. In an award-winning breakthrough year, she was named WTA Player of the Year, WTA Most Improved Player, WTA Fan Favourite Breakthrough Player, ITF World Champion, Czech Sportsperson of the Year and also received the WTA Karen Kratntzcke Sportsmanship Award 2011.
The Awards recognise exceptional sporting achievement. The shortlists of nominees are selected by a panel of the world's leading sports editors, writers and broadcasters with the winners to be selected by the athletes that comprise the Laureus World Sports Academy. The award ceremony will be held in London on February 6th.
The proceeds from the awards directly underpin the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation which supports 89 community sports projects around the world and has raised €40 million since its inception for projects which have improved the lives of more than 1.5 million young people.
For the 2012 season, Petra will be swinging her new Wilson Steam 100 BLX racquet in her efforts to make it to the top of the women's game. Everyone at Wilson wishes Petra the best of luck for the Awards and for further success in 2012!
