Water Hazard Rules

Posted June 18, 2015 in beginner intermediate distance control rules

When you hit in a water hazard, you have choices depending on what type of water hazard it is.

Lateral Water Hazard (marked with yellow stakes): For this type of water hazard there are 5 choices:

  1. Play the ball as it lies. This is the only option that does not give you a penalty.  You are able to take your shoes off, but not touch the ground with any of your equipment or your club.
  2. Drop the ball behind the water hazard. Keep the ball between the point where the original ball last crossed the hazard and the hole. You can go back as far as you want keeping the ball on the line of the pin and the spot where it crossed the water hazard.
  3. Replay the shot again from the same location where you hit it the first time.
  4. Drop within 2 club lengths from where the ball last crossed the water hazard, but no closer to the hole.
  5. Take the spot where the ball last crossed the hazard and go to the opposite side of the water. Drop it at a spot that is equidistant from the hole.

Regular Water Hazard (marked in red stakes):

  1. Play the ball as it lies.
  2. Replay the shot again.
  3. Keep the point at which the ball last crossed the hazard in line with the pin and go back as far as you want on this line.
