Wilson's Kei Nishikori Becomes Highest Ranked Japanese Player in History
Nishikori is now No. 30 in the world, beats Top Four Seed Using Wilson TOUR BLX Racket at 2011 Shanghai Rolex Masters
CHICAGO – Oct. 17, 2011--Today, Wilson Tour player Kei Nishikori becomes the highest ranked male Japanese in history with his high quality of play during the past two tournaments, most recently at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. This past week, Nishikori (seeded number eight) beat number four seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-4 in the first major upset at this highly respected event.
Nishikori came into this week's tournament ranked No. 47 but reached his own career-high with a win Wednesday over Santiago Giraldo, a day after beating Tsonga. His victory over Giraldo puts Nishikori into the quarterfinals of an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event for the first time.
Nishikori, Japan's top player and the number one player in Asia, plays with the Wilson TOUR BLX performance racket, known for its versatility and best in class feel, featuring basalt fibers in its proprietary BLX technology.
With his results this week in the Shanghai Master's event, Nishikori, who lives and trains in Bradenton, Florida, will surpass Shuzo Matsuoka, his idol and mentor, as Japan's highest-ranked male tennis player.
“Kei has been a strong ambassador for Wilson in Japan,” said Renaud Vallon, global tour director for Wilson. “He continues to inspire the next generation of tennis players through his fierce passion and commitment to the sport. We applaud this tremendous achievement and look forward to our continued partnership.”
