Pro tips for elevating your padel game

Here are Miguel’s premier padel tips, including the essential facets of the game, common missteps, and advice to elevate your technique:

1. Master your serve

Vary the direction of your serve to keep your opponent guessing from the start of the point. Angle your body toward the ball and position your racquet for the serve (towards the wall, their body, or the “T”). Racquet position is key to controlling the game from the start.

Mastering your serve demands technique, strategic insight, and a refined understanding of padel rules and the key elements that will clinch the point for you.

2. Net position

At the net, posture is everything. Hold the racquet with both hands, keep your arms relaxed, and maintain a consistently low centre of gravity. This position enables you to respond to both high and low balls while keeping the racquet poised to strike.

3. Volley-to-volley

Distances are minimal in volley play, so you must maintain intensity and active movement at all times. Try to keep play close to the net to take control of the point, and adjust the tempo to your opponent to dominate the play: if you are better than them, speed up the ball; if not, slow it down to avoid losing control.

4. Wall drop shot

The key to an effective wall drop shot is to meet the ball high and strike it close to the body. This allows you to execute the shot with greater precision and avoid losing the point. Move quickly so the ball does not fall too low and maintain control by hitting it closer in.

5. Movement on the court

Padel requires quick preparation for every shot. Keep a low centre of gravity and avoid overextending when hitting the ball. Maintaining this posture allows you to react more effectively to balls on your left or right and to quickly recover your position.

6. Forehand and backhand volleys

Forehand and backhand volleys are very different. In a forehand volley, the palm faces forward and the shoulders are rolled back, whereas in a backhand volley, the back of the palm faces forward and the shoulder pivots forward. Foot positioning also changes: for a forehand volley, you set your foot opposite to the hitting hand, while you set the same-side foot as the hitting hand for a backhand volley.

7. When to play a lob

A lob is a precision shot – you need to know the perfect moment to execute it based on the speed and height of the ball. A ball that is too fast, too slow, too high, or too low is not suitable for shots that require accuracy. For this reason, Miguel recommends this play when the ball is neutral and there is little pressure.

Bonus: How to choose a ball

The ball itself is also a crucial part of your strategy. The ball’s attributes are essential to shaping pace and shot precision. Miguel chooses Wilson Premier Padel Balls for his training sessions, selecting them according to his students’ skill level, playing style, and the court conditions.
