It’s Official: Wilson Reveals New NBA Game Ball

See how we’ve tapped into our history as the official NBA game ball manufacturer and meet our new NBA Advisory Staff.

In 1946, just five years after becoming the official supplier of the Duke NFL Football, Wilson Sporting Goods Company began manufacturing the official basketballs for the NBA, a collaboration that would last for 37 years. In time for the NBA’s 75th anniversary season, Wilson and the NBA have re-partnered, and we are thrilled to create the official NBA game basketballs once again.

“Our partnership with Wilson fittingly comes to life as the we approach our 75th anniversary season,” said Salvatore LaRocca, NBA President, Global Partnerships.  “As the NBA’s official game ball for the league’s first 37 seasons, Wilson makes its return building on our shared history and looking ahead toward the continued growth of the league.”

This opportunity completes a trifecta of collaborative relationships that include manufacturing the official game balls for the WNBA and the BAL (Basketball Africa League). In keeping with the tradition of harnessing athlete’s input, we worked with the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association to develop and approve the new game ball through team evaluation sessions over the past year. The new basketball’s materials, 8-panel configuration, and performance specifications mirror the current official game balls, including using the same leather.

“Wilson is excited to unlock our history and heritage with the NBA to grow the game of basketball on the global stage,” said Kevin Murphy, General Manager, Wilson Team Sports.  “On the heels of launching our WNBA and BAL partnerships, we will continue building for the future of the sport.  Wilson will focus first on supporting the league and its players with its high-performance game balls, then extending our basketball family to reach fans, coaches and players at all levels, around the world.”

NBA hopefuls will debut the new basketball at the Microsoft Surface NBA Draft Combine 2021 beginning Monday, June 21, and ending Sunday, June 27. And coinciding with the NBA Draft on July 29, fans can purchase Wilson’s Official NBA Game Ball on wilson.com.

To continually improve our basketball technology, we have also added a new NBA division to our Wilson Basketball Advisory Staff. Meet our first two members:  2020 NBA All-Star Trae Young and 2016 first-round NBA Draft pick Jamal Murray. Trae and Jamal will playtest, provide feedback, and collaborate with us on our basketball products.

Trae Young joined the Atlanta Hawks in 2018 and has proven himself as an outstanding player ever since. A fan of consistently raising his personal bests for game points and assists, Trae is in good company as one of just four players in NBA history to record 30 points and 10 assists in their playoff debut. He was chosen as an NBA All-Star in January of 2020.

Jamal Murray has played for the Denver Nuggets since 2016 and also plays for the Canadian national basketball team. Jamal continually makes history with career-high 50-point games, conference showings, and shot percentages. In 2020, the Nuggets were the first team in NBA history to overcome multiple 3-1 deficits in one postseason.
