Golf Swing Tips: Getting Out of a Fried Egg Lie

A fried egg lie doesn’t mean a wasted shot. Wilson Advisory Staff Member Brendan Steele demonstrates his tips for how to hit a fried egg lie.

The only situation worse than a bunker shot is the dreaded fried egg lie. When that ball becomes submerged in the sand, it feels like an impossible shot to pull off. The good news is: it’s not. The shot takes some practice, but once you understand the technique you’ll be back on the green in no time.

  1. The first step is to make sure that your clubface is very open. Imagine you’re hitting the ball to the right.
  2. The next step is to make sure your downswing plane is steep. The fried egg lie requires a steeper angle than any other shot.
  3. The next step is to swing very hard and allow the heel of the club to connect with the ball first. The final step is to enjoy your golf buddies’ admiration and continue your game like a pro.
