Recap: Inaugural Pickle Smash Event for Ronald McDonald House is a Huge Hit

Wilson partners with the Ronald Mcdonald House to raise money for families in need.

On July 15th, Wilson and the Ronald Mcdonald house partnered to create the inaugural Pickle Smash Tournament, which was held at the Green St. Rooftop overlooking the skyline of Chicago. The proceeds from the event benefit children and families at Ronald Mcdonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana. Because Wilson’s mission is to empower every person to live like an athlete, this partnership not only resonates with our mission, but also the values of the Ronald Mcdonald House.

The Ronald Mcdonald House was established nationwide to provide resources and support services for families with unwell children, enabling them to stay together during hospitalizations. Ronald Mcdonald House’s family-centered care in a time of need aims to alleviate stress upon families with a sanctuary of care and compassion.

This fundraiser garnered the attention of Chicagoans who came out to volunteer and participate, showcasing their athletic talents and support for the charity. “The partnership between Wilson and our charity has just been unbelievable," said Julie Mazzola, Director of Marketing and Communications of the Ronald Mcdonald House, “We are trying to have a significant impact on families, and [this partnership] has come together so nicely. Pickle Smash has been a terrific event to showcase the impact that our community can have on families. It has been a wonderful day of celebration, sport, and mission.”

The game of Pickleball has become a phenomenon across the United States, which inspired Wilson and the Ronald Mcdonald House to create this family-friendly event. Karyn Schuler, the director of Fundraising and Stewardship for the Ronald Mcdonald House said at the event, “Pickleball is exploding. We are seeing so many different facilities pop up all over the Chicagoland area, so it's exciting for us to tap into that space. All skill levels are welcome; there's no exclusivity based on skill, gender, and age. This is truly a family sport where everyone can get involved, and we love that aspect of the event.”

The Pickle Smash tournament’s organizer, Christina Gerecke, sought to create an environment that was engaging and inviting for the participants . “I am so lucky to work for a company like Wilson that believes great ideas can come from anyone and allows all voices to be heard,” said Gerecke. “From my perspective, authenticity starts at home. You can’t build an authentic brand without authentic people.”

Wilson’s vision to create a better world through sport has allocated the event to raise $40,000 for the children and families of the Ronald Mcdonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. In addition to the equipment and sportswear donated by Wilson, this partnership has unlocked an opportunity for future events with the respected organizations.
