Go one-on-one with MONICA

MONICA Abbott

What's the best play you've ever made?

A couple people tried to run squeeze plays on me and I do the glove toss to home. It’s 0-0 in the bottom of the tenth and it’s basically whoever scores first, wins. Those are always really huge. I’m a pitcher, but in those moments, I’m like, “Man, I’m the shortstop right now!”

Best advice from a coach?

Over-communicate. Don’t be afraid to say even the simplest and toughest of things. In our game, being on the same page is so important. If you can over-communicate on those little situations that come up during practice or in the locker room, then it’ll make tough moments seem a lot easier. You’ll have a lot more trust in those moments.

What's one thing the entire team has in common?

We’re all very determined. I think determination is a big quality in our team. It's in our spirit of the team.

Pregame rituals?

I don't step on the line running out to the bases, running up to the mound. I've never done that since I was a kid so it's just something that is ingrained in me.

What are you most looking forward to on the Team USA Tour?

We're playing at my hometown in Salinas, which I'm super looking forward to. We've been talking about that for years. Those tour stops maybe mean a little more to you because you have a connection there.

What advice would you give young players?

My biggest advice is: keep playing, stay in the game and play as long as you can. Don’t think that it’s impossible. Keep going, even when your back is against the wall and you feel like you want to quit. Don’t stop. Take another step forward. Keep that ‘never give up’ mentality and stay the course. There are plenty of times I feel I could have stopped playing and plenty of times where I wanted to. I forced myself to get up and do one more workout and keep trucking, so to speak. That’s made a huge difference in my career.

When you’re not playing or training?

I'm either working out or I'm training. Sleeping. Shopping.

What is it like to interact with so many fans?

In those really tough moments, where you need to pull through and get that big strike three on a rise ball for your team, I feel the energy and vibes that fans create. You channel from that and that’s how it’s created on the tour. When you’re seeing those kids, when you’re seeing those parents and supporters - those people fill your cup. Those are the people who give you the power in the toughest moments.

I love when I look around and see incredible athletes, my teammates, my family and the companies I represent. I know it’s not really about me anymore. It’s about how I can represent all these other people to the best of my ability. They want to know what they are rooting for and I want to give them that sense of joy.
