We the Game: Dusan Bulut

In Wilson’s #WeTheGame series, we explore the game through the stories of its people: players, coaches, artists, creators, and everyone in between.

In this installment, we take a tour through Serbia with international 3x3 basketball living legend, Dusan Bulut. A 3-time winner of the FIBA 3x3 Tour’s Most Spectacular Player Award, Dusan joined Team Wilson as a member of our advisory staff in 2019, and will be among the first athletes to bring 3x3 basketball to the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.

Tell us about your first encounter or experience with basketball. What was the moment you fell in love with the game?

Even before my first practice, I had a small basketball and a hoop glued to my closet, but it was my first practice when I really fell in love with the game. Even at only 8 years old we were playing with a full-size ball and a regulation hoop. I was the only player that scored in the entire game.

Tell us about growing up in Serbia during a tough time for the country. How did it affect you? How did it affect your relationship with basketball?

It was challenging, and you needed to be tough in order to not be bullied by others. But looking back, it was actually very fun, because we were outside on that basketball court on the street in front of my building for my whole childhood. . All the life lessons and values that I still implement in everyday life, I learned on that court.

When did you realize you might have a path to being a professional basketball player?

I decided in 6th grade to be [sic] pro basketball player and never looked back. I had to learn on my own from my mistakes, successes, and emotions, because I didn’t have successful people or coaches around me. But that’s what made me, and because of that, I got to where I am today.

Who has been your biggest influence?

My own instinct - if I’m wrong, I learn from it, but I believe in myself. I looked to many people for guidance, but at the end of the day, I trust in me.

What’s been your proudest moment through your basketball journey?

I’ve got lot of proud moments, but when you see you made a day better for your fans, that’s the best feeling.

What’s your ultimate goal in the game?

To be greatest of all time.

If you could create a 3X3 team with any 2 other athletes in the world, who would you pick?

For now, I’m satisfied with my team. I think we can beat anybody in the world, so I don’t want or need anyone else right now.
